With Dak Prescott firmly cemented as the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback, all eyes shifted to the backup QB situation. There has been some uncertainty as who the backup QB will be in 2017 and exactly how many QBs will be on the 53-man roster. Fortunately, owner/general manager Jerry Jones recently cleared things up.
If we are to believe Jerry Jones, then the Dallas Cowboys will carry three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in 2017. Of course, anything Jerry Jones says can usually be taken with a grain of salt. You can just never really be completely positive he is being truthful or not.
If Jerry Jones is true to his word, it means that Dak Prescott, Kellen Moore, and Cooper Rush will all be on the roster in 2017. But, there is really no way of telling if the coaching staff is on board with this or how much say they actually have in who stays and who goes.
I don’t know where you stand, but I don’t agree with this move. If you happened to read my final Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster prediction, then you know that I only went with 2 QBs. I just thought that the extra roster spot allocated to the third QB would be better served elsewhere.
The good news is the Dallas Cowboys can have their cake and eat it too. There is a way they can keep all three QBs without having to give up a roster spot.
You see, Kellen Moore is somehow still eligible to be placed on the practice squad. It is very unlikely any team will claim him off of waivers if the Cowboys cut him. That means they could still protect Cooper Rush and still have Moore available if Dak Prescott were to go down with a serious injury (heaven forbid).
So, you can see that nothing is really set in stone just yet, but you can believe Jerry Jones if you want. I for one think it would be a mistake to give Kellen Moore a roster spot when they still can still have him in the mix on the practice squad. But, unfortunately I’m not making the decisions.
